Google Ads Tag Inactive, Unverified or Not Detected: Fix It

Shown in Google Ads: Tag inactive / Unverified / Misconfigured

How do I fix an Inactive or Unverified conversion tag in Google Ads?

"Unverified" means Google has never seen your conversion tag fire; "Inactive" (now labeled Misconfigured) means it worked before but recording has stopped because of a setup error or broken tag. Either way, Google isn't receiving the tag from your site. Use Tag Assistant to find whether the Google tag is missing, duplicated or using the wrong IDs, fix it, then complete a test conversion.

    What this means

These statuses appear in the tracking status column of your conversion actions (Goals > Conversions > Summary):

    StatusWhat it means
UnverifiedThe conversion action exists, but Google hasn't detected the tag on your site yet. All new website conversion actions start here.
Tag inactive / MisconfiguredConversions have stopped recording entirely because of a setup error or broken tag. In 2026 Google replaced the red "Inactive" status with "Misconfigured".
Needs attentionSomething needs fixing, but conversion recording hasn't stopped completely.

You may also see "Google tag not detected" in Tag Assistant or when setting up the tag in Google Ads. That's the root symptom behind most of these statuses: Google's systems loaded your page and didn't find the Google tag (gtag.js) for your account's tag ID.

Google's help center recommends using Tag Assistant to troubleshoot unverified and inactive conversion actions, and that's the fastest path.

    Why it happens

    • The tag was never installed on the site, only created in Google Ads.
    • Wrong IDs. The page has a Google tag, but with a different account's AW- ID or the wrong conversion label (common after copying code from an old store).
    • Tag installed in the wrong place. The base Google tag is on the thank-you page only, or the event snippet is on every page instead of the purchase page.
    • Shopify checkout changes. Code pasted into the old Additional scripts or Order status page stopped running after Shopify's Thank you and Order status page upgrade (August 2025 for Plus, August 26, 2026 for other stores).
    • Tag Manager not published. Changes made in Google Tag Manager but never published, or tags paused.
    • Consent setup blocks everything. A cookie banner that blocks the Google tag from loading at all, instead of using Consent Mode.
    • Script optimization. WooCommerce caching or "delay JavaScript" plugins that prevent the tag from loading before the user leaves.
    • Domain changes. The tag lives on an old domain, staging site or subdomain that customers no longer use.

    How to fix it

    1. Identify which action and source. Hover the status in Google Ads. Note the conversion action name, its tag ID, and whether it's set up via Google tag, Google Tag Manager, Google Analytics import or the Shopify integration. Each source is fixed in a different place.
    2. Run Tag Assistant. Open Tag Assistant (tagassistant.google.com), connect your store URL, and browse to a product, add to cart and the purchase confirmation page. Check:
      • Is a Google tag found with your account's AW- ID?
      • Does the conversion event fire on the confirmation page, with value and currency?
      • Are there duplicate tags or multiple AW- IDs?
    3. Fix Shopify stores.
      • Preferred: connect the Google & YouTube app to the right Google Ads account and enable conversion tracking. It uses Shopify's Customer Events, so it keeps working through checkout updates.
      • If you use a custom setup, create a custom pixel (Settings > Customer events) that loads the Google tag and sends the purchase event on checkout_completed.
      • Remove leftover tag code from theme files and old scripts to avoid duplicates.
    4. Fix WooCommerce stores.
      • Use one method: a dedicated Google tag plugin, or Google Tag Manager. Not both for the same events.
      • Confirm the base tag loads on all pages and the purchase event fires on the order-received endpoint with transaction_id, value and currency.
      • Exclude Google scripts from caching and script-delay settings.
    5. Fix Google Tag Manager setups. Check the conversion tag uses the correct Conversion ID and Conversion Label, the trigger matches the purchase page or event, a Conversion Linker tag is present, and the container is published.
    6. Fix consent. Implement Consent Mode so the tag loads and adjusts behavior based on consent, rather than being blocked entirely.
    7. Place a test order. Then check the conversion action for a recorded conversion. Statuses can take up to a day or two to update after the tag starts firing.

    How long until it's resolved

Once Google detects the tag firing, "Unverified" typically changes within a day. "Misconfigured" returns to "Active" after conversions record again, usually within 24 to 48 hours of a working fix. Conversion data you missed while the tag was broken can't be recovered retroactively through the tag.

    How to prevent it

    • Document your setup: which source tracks purchases, which actions are primary, and where the code lives.
    • Test after every change to theme, checkout, apps, consent banner or caching plugins.
    • Avoid duplicate methods (app plus manual code plus GTM) for the same purchase event.
    • Remove unused conversion actions so the summary reflects reality.
    • Check statuses weekly, or set an alert when conversions drop.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Until Google sees the tag fire on your site. With a working tag and a test conversion, it usually updates within a day.

On Shopify, the checkout and thank-you pages run in a sandboxed environment where theme code doesn't load, so tags must be added through Customer Events (the Google & YouTube app or a custom pixel). On other platforms, the tag likely isn't installed on that page.

Unverified means the tag has never been seen. Misconfigured means it was set up, but recording has now stopped because of an error or broken tag.

You can, but tracking the same purchase twice inflates conversions. Choose one as the primary purchase action and make the other secondary or remove it.
