To set up Google Ads for Shopify, install Google's official Google & YouTube app, connect your Google account, link or create a Merchant Center account to sync your products, connect a Google Ads account, and confirm conversion tracking is recording purchases. Then launch a first campaign, usually Performance Max or Standard Shopping, with a realistic budget. This guide walks through each step, plus the checks most stores skip.

What you need before you start

Get these ready before you open the app. It makes the setup much smoother.

  • A live Shopify store that is not password-protected, on your own domain.
  • A Google account you will use for business. Ideally this is a company-controlled account, not one personal employee's Gmail that might leave with them.
  • Store policies in place: a refund or return policy, shipping policy, privacy policy and terms of service, all linked in the footer.
  • Clear contact information: business name, address, phone number and email visible on the site.
  • Products with complete data: good titles, descriptions, prices, images and, where available, GTINs (barcodes) and brand.
  • Shipping rates set up in Shopify, so they can sync to Merchant Center.

The policy and contact items matter more than people expect. Missing them is a common cause of Merchant Center suspensions. If you have already run into that, see our guide to fixing a Merchant Center misrepresentation suspension.

Step 1: Install the Google & YouTube app

In your Shopify admin, go to the Shopify App Store and search for Google & YouTube. It is published by Google and is free to install. Add it to your store.

Once installed, the app appears as a sales channel in your Shopify admin. The setup flow will guide you through connecting the accounts it needs.

Step 2: Connect your Google account

The app will ask you to sign in with a Google account and grant permissions. Use the business Google account you prepared. This account will be used to access or create your Merchant Center and Google Ads accounts.

If an agency or freelancer is helping you, they can be added as users to Merchant Center and Google Ads later. You do not need to share your login.

Step 3: Connect or create a Merchant Center account

Next, the app asks you to connect Merchant Center. You can choose an existing Merchant Center account linked to your Google account, or create a new one.

During this step, the app will typically:

  • Verify and claim your store's website in Merchant Center
  • Set up the countries and languages you want to sell in, based on your Shopify markets
  • Sync shipping settings from Shopify
  • Begin syncing your products

If you already have a Merchant Center account that you set up another way, such as with a third-party feed app, decide which one you want to use. Running two product feeds for the same products into the same account can create duplicates and confusion. Pick one source of truth.

Review your product sync

After the connection, products are synced to Merchant Center. Approval is not instant. Products need to be reviewed, and new accounts in particular can take a few days to settle.

In the app, you can see the sync status of your products. In Merchant Center itself, check the products section for items that are disapproved or need attention. Common issues include:

  • Missing GTINs or brand on branded products
  • Images that are too small or have promotional overlays
  • Price or availability mismatches between the feed and the website
  • Missing shipping information for a target country

Fix issues in Shopify where possible, since the app syncs from your Shopify product data. For deeper feed improvements, such as rewriting titles for search or adding custom labels, see our guide to Google Shopping feed optimization.

Free listings

Once products are approved, they can appear in free listings on Google. These are unpaid product listings in Google search results and the Shopping tab. They are a nice bonus, but they are not a replacement for paid campaigns if you want consistent traffic.

Step 4: Connect a Google Ads account

The app also lets you connect an existing Google Ads account or create a new one. Connecting Google Ads to your Merchant Center account is what lets your synced products be used in Shopping and Performance Max campaigns.

If you already run Google Ads, connect your existing account rather than creating a second one. Your existing account has history and audiences that are worth keeping.

Make sure billing is set up in Google Ads. Campaigns will not run until a payment method is in place.

Step 5: Set up conversion tracking

This is the step that makes or breaks your campaigns. Without accurate purchase tracking, Google's automated bidding cannot learn which clicks lead to sales, and you cannot tell whether your ads are profitable.

What the app sets up

When you connect Google Ads through the Google & YouTube app, it can set up conversion tracking for you. The app adds the Google tag to your store through Shopify's customer events system and creates conversion actions in Google Ads for key steps such as purchases, and often page views, add to cart and checkout steps.

The app also offers enhanced conversions, which sends hashed first-party customer data, such as email addresses, to improve conversion measurement. Turning this on is generally recommended, provided your privacy policy and consent setup cover it.

Checks to run after setup

Do not assume tracking works just because the app says it is connected. Check:

  1. In Google Ads, go to Goals and then Conversions. Confirm you see the conversion actions the app created and that the purchase action is set as a primary action.
  2. Check for duplicates. If you previously installed a Google Ads tag manually, through a theme edit or another app, you may now be counting purchases twice. Keep one source of purchase tracking and set the others to secondary or remove them.
  3. Place a test order or wait for real orders, then confirm the purchase conversions appear in Google Ads. Conversions can take some hours to show.
  4. Compare numbers. Over a week or two, compare purchase counts in Google Ads with orders attributed in Shopify. They will never match exactly, because of attribution differences and consent, but they should be in the same range.

Conversion value

Check what value is being sent with each purchase. Some merchants report that the value sent reflects the product subtotal rather than the full order total including shipping and tax. Using a value that excludes shipping and tax is actually reasonable for measuring return on ad spend, but you need to know which one you are getting so your ROAS targets make sense.

If you sell to customers in regions with consent requirements, such as the EU or UK, make sure your Shopify consent settings and cookie banner are configured, and that Google's consent mode signals are being passed. Without it, you may lose conversion data or run into compliance problems.

Step 6: Decide on your first campaign

With products approved and tracking confirmed, you are ready to launch. Most Shopify stores start with one of three options.

Campaign typeBest forTrade-off
Performance MaxStores that want broad reach across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display and more, with Google's automationLess control and visibility over where ads show
Standard ShoppingStores that want control over products, bids and search termsMore manual management, narrower reach
Search (brand and key terms)Capturing people searching your brand name or specific high-intent termsRequires keyword research and ad copy

Performance Max

The Google & YouTube app lets you create a Performance Max campaign directly from Shopify with a simple flow: choose your budget and target countries, and the app handles the rest. This is the easiest way to start.

The simple setup is convenient but limited. Creating the campaign in Google Ads directly gives you more control over asset groups, listing groups, audience signals, brand exclusions and bidding targets. Many stores start in the app and move to managing campaigns in Google Ads once they have data.

Learn more in our guide to Performance Max for e-commerce.

Standard Shopping

Standard Shopping campaigns are created in Google Ads, not in the Shopify app. They are useful if you want to see search terms, add negative keywords and control bids product by product. Some stores run Standard Shopping alongside Performance Max for specific product groups, or use it to learn which products and terms convert before handing them to automation.

A small Search campaign on your own brand name is often worth having, since it is typically low cost and captures people who already know you. Check whether your brand is being covered by Performance Max first, so the two campaigns are not competing for the same searches without a plan.

Step 7: Set a realistic budget and bidding strategy

New campaigns need enough budget to gather data. A budget that is too small spreads clicks so thin that Google's bidding has very little to learn from.

Some guidelines:

  • Start with a daily budget you can sustain for at least a few weeks. Turning campaigns on and off every few days resets learning.
  • Begin with Maximize conversions or Maximize conversion value without a target, or with a conservative target, until you have conversion data.
  • Add a target ROAS once you have consistent conversions. Set it based on your margins, not on a number you saw online.

Our Google Ads budget calculator helps you estimate a starting budget, and the break-even ROAS calculator tells you the minimum ROAS each product group needs to be profitable. For more on budget planning, see how much to spend on Google Ads for e-commerce.

Step 8: Monitor the first 30 days

The first month is about learning and fixing problems, not judging final results.

Week 1:

  • Confirm the campaign is serving and products are getting impressions.
  • Check that conversions are being recorded.
  • Watch for new Merchant Center disapprovals.

Weeks 2 to 3:

  • Review which products get impressions and which get none. Products with no impressions may have feed problems.
  • For Standard Shopping or Search, review search terms and add negative keywords for irrelevant queries. Our guide to negative keywords for e-commerce has examples.
  • Avoid big changes to budget or targets. Small adjustments are fine.

Week 4:

  • Compare spend, conversions and conversion value against your break-even ROAS.
  • Decide whether to increase budget, adjust targets, or split products into separate campaigns by margin or performance.

Common setup mistakes to avoid

  • Duplicate purchase tracking. Old tags from previous apps or theme edits inflate conversions and mislead bidding.
  • Two feeds for the same products. Running the Google & YouTube app and another feed app into the same Merchant Center account at the same time.
  • Launching before products are approved. Campaigns cannot show products that are still pending or disapproved.
  • Ignoring Merchant Center warnings. Warnings can turn into disapprovals, and account-level issues can stop everything.
  • Judging results after a few days. Automated campaigns need time and conversion data to stabilize.
  • Setting a target ROAS too high too early. This can choke the campaign so it barely spends.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Google & YouTube app free for Shopify?

Yes, the app itself is free to install. You pay only for Google Ads campaigns you run, while free product listings on Google cost nothing.

How long does it take for Shopify products to be approved in Merchant Center?

It often takes a few days, and new accounts can take longer as Google reviews the website and products. Check Merchant Center for any disapprovals or account issues while you wait.

Should I use Performance Max or Standard Shopping for my Shopify store?

Performance Max is the easiest starting point and reaches more Google surfaces, while Standard Shopping gives more control and visibility over search terms and bids. Many stores start with Performance Max and add Standard Shopping for specific products when they need more control.

Does the Google & YouTube app set up conversion tracking automatically?

It can set up the Google tag and purchase conversion actions when you connect Google Ads through the app. You should still check for duplicate tags, confirm purchases are recorded, and make sure the purchase action is set as primary.

How much should a Shopify store spend on Google Ads to start?

There is no single right number, but your daily budget should be enough to generate regular clicks and conversions for several weeks without stopping. Use your margins and break-even ROAS to decide what you can afford to test.
