Missing Age Group or Gender in Merchant Center: Fix

Shown in Google Merchant Center: Missing value: size [size], color [color], gender [gender], age group [age_group]

How do I fix missing age group or gender in Merchant Center?

When Merchant Center flags missing gender or age_group, it means an apparel product was submitted without the demographic attributes Google requires for clothing and accessories, so it can't show in those listings. The fix is to add age_group (newborn, infant, toddler, kids or adult) and gender (male, female or unisex) to every affected product. Most catalogs can fix this in minutes with one attribute rule, because the values are the same across large groups of products.

    What this issue means

Google requires both attributes for all Apparel & Accessories products in free listings, and for Shopping ads in that category when targeting Brazil, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom or the United States. Merchant Center Next groups this with other apparel requirements in one issue: "Missing value: size [size], color [color], gender [gender], age group [age_group]". The products flagged may be missing just one of these attributes or several.

    Accepted values:

    AttributeValuesNotes
age_groupnewborn (0 to 3 months), infant (3 to 12 months), toddler (1 to 5 years), kids (5 to 13 years), adult (teens and older)No default; if you don't submit it, no value is used
gendermale, female, unisexMust be submitted in English

Google says to use adult for products that aren't exclusively for children, and that it doesn't restrict where the product appears. Some subcategories, such as keychains, lanyards, shoelaces and watch bands, have these attributes as optional.

    Why it happens

    • Store platforms don't have these fields by default. Shopify and WooCommerce don't require gender or age group for products, so they're often never entered.
    • The data exists only in collection names or tags. "Women's Dresses" or a kids tag tells your customers, but not Google.
    • The Google channel fields were never filled. Shopify's Google & YouTube app lets you set age group and gender, but they're blank unless someone sets them.
    • Localized values. Values like femme, herren or niños instead of the English values.
    • Wrong category assignment. A non-apparel product (a pet bandana, a car seat cover) gets auto-categorized as apparel and inherits these requirements.

    How to fix it

    1. Export and segment. In Merchant Center, go to Products > Needs attention, filter for the apparel attributes issue, and download the CSV. Group products by who they're for: women's, men's, kids', baby, unisex.

    2. Check categories. For any product that isn't apparel, set google_product_category to the correct category. Google notes that a wrong automatic category can create requirements you didn't expect.

    3. Choose values carefully:

      • Unisex items like plain T-shirts, socks, hats and many accessories: unisex
      • Adult items, including teen sizes: adult
      • Children's sizes 5 to 13 years: kids; ages 1 to 5: toddler; baby sizes: infant or newborn
      • When men's and women's versions are variants of the same product, give each its own gender with the same item_group_id
    4. Apply them in your platform:

      • Shopify (Google & YouTube app): Open Sales channels > Google & YouTube, go to the product list, select the affected products and use the bulk editor to set Age group and Gender. You can also set them on an individual product page. Filter by collection (for example, Women's) to update large groups at once. If you manage these through metafields or Shopify Flow, make sure the values are exactly the accepted ones.
      • WooCommerce: Google for WooCommerce includes gender and age group fields in each product's Google attributes, and its attribute mapping can set them from categories or product attributes. A rule like "products in the Women category get gender female" handles most catalogs.
      • Attribute rules in Merchant Center: Create rules that set gender and age_group based on another attribute, such as product_type, title or a custom label. For example: if product_type contains "Women", set gender to female. In a separate age_group rule, if product_type contains "Kids", set it to kids. Add a final default of adult for age group if your store sells only adult apparel.
      • Supplemental source: Upload id, gender and age_group for precise control over specific products.
    5. Fill the rest of the combined issue. While you're here, check that every flagged item also has color, and size for clothing and shoes. Otherwise products stay disapproved for the remaining attributes.

    How long until it's fixed

Once values reach Merchant Center, products usually clear after the next processing cycle, typically within one to three days. Attribute rules apply on the next fetch of the data source. In Shopify, bulk edits in the Google & YouTube channel sync automatically; give them a few hours before checking Merchant Center.

    How to prevent it

    • Add gender and age group to your product creation checklist for apparel.
    • Structure product_type so rules can infer demographics reliably (for example, Women > Tops > T-Shirts).
    • Keep a default rule (adult and unisex where accurate) as a safety net, and override exceptions.
    • Recheck when launching new kids' or baby lines, which need different values.

Getting these attributes right also helps Google show your products to the right shoppers and filters. If your apparel feed has gaps across many attributes, Mercantads can fix the structure and set up rules that hold up as your catalog grows; see our Merchant Center service or the product feed optimization guide.

    Frequently Asked Questions

They're different attributes. unisex is a gender value, and adult is an age group value; a unisex adult T-shirt needs both.

Google's kids range covers 5 to 13 years and adult covers roughly 13 and older, so teen sizes typically use adult.

Yes, if it's accurate. An attribute rule setting agegroup to adult for every product is fine for an adult-only store, but gender usually varies by product.
