Excessive Capitalization in Merchant Center Titles: Fix

Shown in Google Merchant Center: Excessive capitalization

How do I fix "Excessive capitalization" in Merchant Center titles?

"Excessive capitalization" means Google found too much capitalized text in your product titles, such as words in ALL CAPS for emphasis, which it treats as a spam signal. The fix is to rewrite affected titles in standard sentence or title case, keeping capitals only for brand names that are officially styled that way, acronyms, sizes and units. Promotional words like SALE, NEW or FREE SHIPPING should be removed from the title entirely.

    What this issue means

Google's title rules prohibit capital letters used for emphasis. Its help page for this issue explains that heavy capitalization makes listings look less trustworthy because the style is common with spam and unreliable sellers. Standard uses are fine:

    • Allowed: acronyms and initials (USB, LED, HDMI), official brand styling (ASUS, IKEA if that's how the brand writes it), size codes (XL, XXL), units and abbreviations (GB, USD), country codes (UK, US)
    • Not allowed: capitals used for effect, like PREMIUM LEATHER WALLET or Running Shoes - BEST SELLER - HUGE SALE

Google also notes that its automated systems sometimes flag products incorrectly. If a title is legitimately capitalized, such as a model number made of letters, you can fix what you can and request a review if it persists.

Depending on severity, this can limit performance or disapprove the product.

    Why it happens

    • Supplier or manufacturer data in uppercase. Many ERP systems, wholesale catalogs and older POS systems store product names in all caps.
    • Marketplace habits. Titles copied from eBay or Amazon listings that use caps to stand out.
    • Promotional words in the title. NEW, SALE, HOT, LIMITED, FREE GIFT. Google treats these as promotional text as well as capitalization problems.
    • Theme or CSS tricks don't carry over. Your site may display titles in uppercase via CSS, but if someone typed them in caps in the admin, that's what the feed sends.
    • Shouting brand names. Writing a brand as NIKE when the brand doesn't require all caps, repeated across hundreds of products.

    How to fix it

    1. Export the affected products. In Merchant Center, go to Products > Needs attention, filter for "Excessive capitalization", and download the CSV.

    2. Decide what stays capitalized. Make a short list of exceptions for your catalog: brand names officially written in caps, acronyms, size codes, model numbers. Everything else goes to title case or sentence case.

    3. Convert in bulk, then review. In a spreadsheet, =PROPER() converts text to title case, but it will also break acronyms (Usb-C) and model numbers. Use it as a first pass, then use find-and-replace to restore your exception list. Review a sample by eye before uploading.

    4. Remove promotional words. Delete SALE, NEW, BEST SELLER, FREE SHIPPING and similar terms. Use Merchant Center promotions or the sale_price attribute for offers instead. Our product title builder can help you rebuild titles with a clean structure.

    5. Apply the fix where the data lives:

      • Shopify (Google & YouTube app): The channel sends your Shopify product title. Edit titles in the product admin or with the bulk editor. If your storefront design calls for uppercase, apply it with your theme's CSS (text-transform: uppercase in the theme settings or stylesheet) and keep the stored title in normal case.
      • WooCommerce: Edit product names directly, or use a bulk edit plugin. If your feed plugin supports a custom title field, you can map a cleaned version there.
      • Supplemental source: Upload a sheet with id and the corrected title to override the feed without changing your site. Useful when your ERP overwrites store titles nightly.
      • Attribute rules: Merchant Center attribute rules can find and replace text, for example removing SALE - from the start of titles. They can't reliably fix case on their own, so use them for removing words and handle case in your source data.
    6. Request a review if needed. If a product is still flagged after correction and you believe the capitalization is legitimate, you can request a review from the product's issue details.

    How long until it's fixed

After the updated titles are processed, the issue typically clears from Needs attention within a few days. If the product was disapproved, it returns once Google re-evaluates the new title. If your source system rewrites titles in caps on the next sync, the issue will come back, so fix it upstream.

    How to prevent it

    • Store titles in normal case in your PIM or ERP, and handle visual styling with CSS.
    • Add a check to your import process that flags titles with more than a few uppercase words.
    • Keep promotional language out of product titles completely.
    • Use one standard spelling for each brand.

Clean, consistent titles help more than compliance; they improve how Google matches your products to searches. For a full title and feed review, see our Merchant Center service or read our product feed optimization guide.
