How do I write a good Google Shopping product title?

In Google Shopping there are no keywords to bid on. Google matches your products to searches largely using the data in your feed, and the title is one of the strongest signals. A title that clearly states the brand, the product and its key attributes helps Google show the product for the right searches and helps shoppers recognize it at a glance.

When to use the product title builder

    Best for

    • Writing feed titles for new products
    • Rewriting short or stylized website titles
    • Giving each variant a distinct title

    Not the right pick for

    • Writing Search ad headlines — use the Google Ads copy checker
    • Validating the rest of your feed — use the Merchant Center feed checker

    Google's title rules

    According to Merchant Center Help:

    • Maximum length is 150 characters. Longer titles are truncated and you receive a warning.
    • Shoppers usually see only the first 70 characters or fewer, depending on screen size, so put the most important details first.
    • Include distinguishing details such as size, color, material and age group, and also submit them in their own attributes.
    • No promotional text. Leave out prices, sale wording, shipping and delivery claims, and your store name.
    • No all caps for emphasis, symbols or HTML.

How to use the title builder

    1. Choose your category so the builder applies a suitable attribute order.
    2. Enter the brand as it appears on the product.
    3. Enter the product type in the words shoppers use, for example "Running Shoes" rather than an internal name.
    4. Add attributes that apply: gender, color, size, material and model.
    5. Review the generated titles, the 150-character counter and the first-70-characters preview, then copy the version you prefer into your feed.

The builder uses orders that follow the logic of Google's examples: lead with what the shopper searches for, then add the details that distinguish one variant from another.

    CategoryTypical order
ApparelBrand + Gender + Product type + Material or style + Color + Size
ElectronicsBrand + Product line + Model + Key spec + Color
Home and furnitureBrand + Product type + Material + Color + Dimensions
Beauty and healthBrand + Product type + Key attribute (scent, shade) + Size or quantity
Auto partsBrand + Part type + Model or part number + Compatibility

These are starting points, not fixed rules. If shoppers in your niche search by model number first, lead with it.

    Example

Inputs: brand "Northpeak", product type "Insulated Jacket", gender "Women's", material "Recycled Down", color "Forest Green", size "M".

A good title: Northpeak Women's Insulated Jacket - Recycled Down - Forest Green - M

The first 70 characters contain brand, gender, product and material, which is exactly what a searcher scanning results needs.

    Reading the preview

The first-70-characters preview approximates what many shoppers see before truncation. If the product type is not visible there, move it forward. The 150-character counter tells you how much room you have left for secondary attributes such as pattern, fit or pack size.

    Common mistakes

    • Starting with the store name or a vague collection name that nobody searches for.
    • Keyword stuffing, for example repeating "jacket coat parka" to catch every search. It reads poorly and does not help.
    • Identical titles for every variant. If sizes and colors share one title, Google and shoppers cannot tell them apart.
    • Promotional wording like "Best Price" or "Free Shipping", which is against the title rules.
    • Using the website title as-is. Store titles are often short and stylized; feed titles can be more descriptive.

    Tips

    • Use the search terms report from your Shopping or Performance Max campaigns to see which words shoppers actually use, then work them into titles.
    • Test title changes on a group of products and compare impressions and click-through rate before rolling them out.
    • Check the rest of your feed with the Merchant Center feed checker, and read our full guide to product feed optimization.
    • Titles are one of the fastest levers for improving Shopping results. See how we use them in our Google Shopping ads service.
