The image is the first thing a shopper sees in a Shopping ad, and Google checks every image_link before a product can serve. Images that are too small, in an unsupported format or too large to process can be disapproved, and images that just scrape past the minimum often look soft on high-resolution screens. This checker reads your file in the browser and compares it against Google's technical requirements.

- Checking main images before a feed upload
- Finding images below the new 500 x 500 minimum
- Fixing image-related disapprovals
Not the right pick for

- Validating the rest of your feed — use the Merchant Center feed checker
How it works
- 1

Use the main image from your feed's image_link.
- 2
Review dimensions
Compare against the minimums for your product type.
- 3
Check size and format
Make sure the file is an accepted format under 16 MB.
- 4
Check the aspect ratio
Prefer square images, then fix anything flagged.
How to use the image checker
- Upload the main product image you send in your feed's
image_link. - Review dimensions against the minimums for your product type.
- Check file size and format.
- Look at the aspect ratio to see how the image will fit in square and rectangular placements.
- Fix anything flagged, re-export and check again.
What the checker tests
Minimum pixel dimensions
Google's long-standing minimums are 100 x 100 pixels for most products and 250 x 250 pixels for apparel. Google has announced a stricter minimum of 500 x 500 pixels for all products, with enforcement beginning January 31, 2027, and has been warning merchants whose images fall between the old minimum and the new one. If your images are below 500 x 500, treat them as a priority to replace now rather than waiting for disapprovals.
Recommended size
The checker flags images under 800 x 800 pixels as worth improving. Google's own guidance goes further, recommending images of around 1500 x 1500 pixels or larger for the best results across listing formats. Larger images also let Google show zoomed or full-screen views without visible blur.
Maximum size
Images must be no larger than 64 megapixels and 16 MB. Very large camera exports can exceed these, so resize and compress before uploading.
Format
Google accepts JPEG, WebP, PNG, non-animated GIF, BMP and TIFF. The file extension should match the actual format. JPEG and WebP are usually the best balance of quality and file size for product photos.
Aspect ratio
Square images display most consistently in Shopping placements. Very wide or tall images are padded or cropped, which makes the product appear smaller. The checker shows your ratio so you can spot images that will lose impact.
Content rules the checker cannot test
Google also reviews what is in the picture. Your main image should:
- Show the actual product clearly, not a placeholder, logo or generic illustration.
- Avoid promotional overlays, text, badges, watermarks and borders.
- Not be upscaled from a small original or be a thumbnail.
- Match the variant in the listing, so the blue shirt listing shows the blue shirt.
Lifestyle shots, angles and close-ups belong in additional_image_link, where Google allows more flexibility.
Common mistakes
- Upscaling a small image to hit the minimum. It passes the pixel check but looks blurry and goes against Google's guidance.
- Adding "Sale" or "Free shipping" badges to the main image.
- Using the same image for every variant.
- Serving images from a slow or blocked server, so Google's crawler cannot fetch them.
Tips
- Shoot at high resolution once and export a feed-ready version at 1500 pixels or more on the long side.
- Use a clean, neutral background for the main image and keep the product filling most of the frame.
- After fixing images, validate the rest of your product data with the Merchant Center feed checker.
- Better images improve click-through rate, which helps Shopping performance. For more feed improvements, read our product feed optimization guide.
