"Missing value [color]" means an apparel product was submitted without a color attribute, which Google requires for clothing and accessories, so the product won't show until it's added. The fix is to send a real color name (like Black or Navy/White) for every variant, either through a variant option named Color in your store or a mapped attribute in your feed. Values like "Multi", "See image" or hex codes don't count.
Missing Color Value in Merchant Center: How to Fix It
How do I fix "Missing value [color]" in Merchant Center?
What this issue means
Google requires color for Apparel & Accessories products. Its specification makes it mandatory for free listings in that category, and required for Shopping ads when targeting Brazil, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom or the United States. In Merchant Center Next, this often appears as part of a combined apparel issue: "Missing value: size [size], color [color], gender [gender], age group [age_group]".
Google's format rules for color:
- 1 to 100 characters total, and 1 to 40 characters per color
- Up to 3 colors: one primary and up to two secondary, separated by a slash, for example
Red/Green/Black - No commas between colors, no numbers, no hex codes or other non-alphanumeric codes, no single letters (except single CJK characters)
- No references like "see image" and no non-color words like "variety", "mens" or "N/A"
- Must match the color shown on your landing page
Each color variant should be a separate product, sharing the same item_group_id.
Why it happens
- Shopify variant option isn't called Color. The Google & YouTube channel reads variant options to fill color and size. If your option is named "Shade", "Finish", "Style" or "Option1", Google may not get a color.
- Single-color products have no variants. A T-shirt sold in one color has no Color option, so nothing is sent.
- WooCommerce attribute not mapped. Your variations use a "Colour" or "pa_color" attribute, but the Google feed plugin isn't mapped to it.
- Google assigned an apparel category you didn't expect. Google auto-categorizes every product. If it decides your phone case or tote bag is apparel, color suddenly becomes required. Google's help page notes that setting the correct category manually may resolve this.
- Invalid placeholder values like "Assorted", "Random" or "Multicolor" that Google treats as missing or invalid.
How to fix it
Export the affected products. In Merchant Center, go to Products > Needs attention, filter for the missing color (or missing apparel attributes) issue, and download the CSV.
Confirm the product is actually apparel. If it's not clothing or an accessory, set
google_product_categoryto the correct category. That removes the apparel requirement. If it is apparel, keep going.Add color at the source:
- Shopify (Google & YouTube app): For products with variants, name the variant option Color (or Colour) and use real color names as values. For single-color products, you can still add a Color option with one value, or set the color in the product's category metafields if your theme and channel use them. Check the Google & YouTube channel's product view afterward to confirm color is populated.
- WooCommerce: Use a global attribute such as Color for variations. In Google for WooCommerce, use attribute mapping to map that attribute to
color, or fill the color field in each product's Google attributes. - Feed files: Add a
colorcolumn with one value per variant row. - Supplemental source: Upload
idandcolorfor affected items when you can't change the store quickly.
Clean up the values. Replace creative names that shoppers won't search with standard ones, or combine them. Google's own example: a custom shade like "mango explosion" can stay in
color, with a standard name like "Orange" added to the title. Replace "Multi" or "Assorted" with the actual main colors, for exampleBlue/White/Red. Use slashes, not commas.Use attribute rules for patterns. If the color appears reliably in your title or SKU (for example,
TS-001-BLK), an attribute rule can extract or map it, for example "if SKU ends with BLK, set color to Black." Verify a sample of the output.Check grouped variants. If some variants in an
item_group_idhave a color and others don't, Google may raise a separate grouped variants issue. Fill color on every variant in the group.
How long until it's fixed
Once color values reach Merchant Center, apparel disapprovals usually clear after reprocessing, typically within one to three days. If you renamed Shopify variant options, the channel should resync those products automatically; confirm in the Google & YouTube channel that they're no longer marked "Under review" before you expect Merchant Center to update.
How to prevent it
- Standardize variant option names across your catalog: Color and Size.
- Add a color value even for single-color apparel items.
- Keep a list of approved color names and map creative names to them.
- Review new collections in Merchant Center before a big launch or promotion.
Apparel feeds have more required attributes than any other category, and gaps here are one of the most common reasons fashion stores lose Shopping visibility.
