Missing Value [brand] in Merchant Center: How to Fix It

Shown in Google Merchant Center: Missing value [brand]

How do I fix "Missing value [brand]" in Merchant Center?

"Missing value [brand]" means a product with a clear brand or manufacturer was submitted without the brand attribute. The fix is to add the manufacturer's brand name (1 to 70 characters) to every affected product, or your own store name if you make or private-label the product. In Shopify this usually means filling the Vendor field; in WooCommerce it means mapping your brand taxonomy to the feed.

    What this issue means

Google uses brand together with GTIN and MPN to identify products. Its specification says brand is required for every product with a clearly associated brand or manufacturer, including items where you are the manufacturer (homemade or custom goods). It's optional only for products without a clear brand, such as some movies, books, music or posters.

Without a brand, Google has a harder time matching your listing, and shoppers who filter or search by brand won't find it. If the product also lacks a GTIN, the missing brand means it has none of the identifiers Google relies on, which compounds the problem.

    Why it happens

    • Shopify's Vendor field is empty or wrong. The Google & YouTube app sends Shopify's Vendor as brand. Products created by hand or imported with a blank vendor go out without a brand. Some stores also put their supplier's company name in Vendor, which sends the wrong brand.
    • WooCommerce has no brand field by default. Brands often live in a plugin's taxonomy, a product attribute called "Brand", or nowhere at all. If the feed plugin isn't mapped to that source, nothing is sent.
    • Supplier or dropship catalogs omitted it. The brand is in the product title but not in a separate field.
    • A feed rule or supplemental source overwrote it with an empty value.
    • Brand text exceeds 70 characters or contains the brand in multiple languages, so it's dropped or flagged.

    How to fix it

    1. Get the list. In Merchant Center, go to Products > Needs attention, filter for the brand issue, and download the CSV.

    2. Decide the correct brand for each product. Google's guidance:

      • Branded resale goods: use the manufacturer's brand, for example "Anker" or "Yeti". Use the brand shoppers recognize, not the distributor's legal name.
      • Compatible or replacement parts: use the brand of the company that actually made the part. Don't use the original equipment manufacturer's brand for an aftermarket product; that also creates misrepresentation risk.
      • Private label, store brand, handmade or custom goods: use your store name as the brand.
      • Bundles you assembled: use the brand of the main product. Multipacks you assembled: use the brand of the individual product.
      • Truly unbranded generic items: leave it out rather than invent a brand.
    3. Fix it in your platform:

      • Shopify (Google & YouTube app): In Products, filter by empty Vendor, select the affected products, and use Bulk edit to set the Vendor column. The channel syncs the new value to Merchant Center automatically. If your Vendor field holds supplier names you need for operations, keep the supplier info in a metafield or tag instead and use Vendor for the consumer-facing brand.
      • WooCommerce: Make sure brands are stored in one place (a brand taxonomy, or a global attribute named Brand). Then, in your Google feed plugin's attribute mapping (in Google for WooCommerce, the attribute mapping settings let you map a source to brand), point brand at that source. As a fallback, many plugins let you set a default brand, which works if you sell only your own private label.
      • Feed files and supplemental sources: Add a brand column. For a quick fix without touching the store, upload a supplemental source with id and brand.
    4. Use attribute rules for patterns. If every product from a given supplier is the same brand, or the brand is always the first word of the title, an attribute rule (feed rule) in Merchant Center can set brand based on another field. Review the output carefully; title-based extraction breaks easily.

    5. Pair brand with MPN where there's no GTIN. Google's rule is that a product needs either a GTIN or both brand and MPN. If you fix brand but the product still has neither GTIN nor MPN, you'll likely move straight into a missing identifiers warning.

    How long until it's fixed

After the corrected data reaches Merchant Center, the Needs attention page typically updates within one to three days. Shopify and WooCommerce apps usually sync within hours of saving. If a product still shows no brand after several days, open it in Merchant Center and check which data source supplied the final value; a supplemental source or rule may be overriding your fix.

    How to prevent it

    • Make Vendor or Brand a mandatory field in your product creation process.
    • Standardize spelling and capitalization ("Yeti", not "YETI" and "Yeti Coolers" across different products).
    • Map brand once in your feed tool rather than relying on title text.
    • Check new supplier imports for empty brand fields before publishing them.
    • Don't use your store name as the brand for third-party branded products; it misrepresents the item.

Clean brand data also improves your campaigns, because brand is one of the most useful ways to segment Shopping and Performance Max. See how we structure feeds for that in product feed optimization, or let Mercantads handle it through our Merchant Center management.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Only if you manufacture the product or it's your private label. For products made by other companies, submit the manufacturer's brand.

If the product has no clear brand, Google says the attribute is optional, so leave it out instead of guessing. If you are the maker and sole seller, use your store name and add an MPN of your own.

It doesn't have to appear in the title, but it must be accurate and consistent with your landing page. Including the brand in the title often helps shoppers and click-through rate.
