This issue means Google believes your product has a manufacturer-assigned barcode (GTIN), but your feed didn't send one, so the product is shown less often or not at all. The fastest fix is to add the real UPC, EAN, JAN or ISBN from the product packaging or your supplier to the gtin attribute. If the product truly has no GTIN, submit brand plus mpn instead, or set identifier_exists to no for genuinely custom or one-of-a-kind items.
Missing GTIN in Google Merchant Center: How to Fix It
How do I fix "Missing value [gtin]" in Merchant Center?
What this issue means
Google matches your listing against its product catalog using unique product identifiers: GTIN, brand and MPN. When the identifiers are missing, Google can't confidently tie your offer to the product shoppers are searching for, so it limits how often the item appears in Shopping ads and free listings.
In Merchant Center Next you'll see it under Products > Needs attention, often labeled as a missing or incorrect GTIN with the note that performance is limited. In most cases it's a warning, not a disapproval, but Google's GTIN specification says that leaving out a GTIN a product actually has can lead to disapproval. Treat it as lost traffic either way.
Google's rule of thumb is simple: every product needs either a valid GTIN, or both a brand and an MPN.
Why it happens
- The barcode field is empty in your store. In Shopify, the GTIN comes from the variant Barcode field. Many stores never filled it in, especially after importing products from a supplier sheet that left it blank.
- You resell a branded product but treat it as your own. If you sell Nike, Anker or LEGO items, those products have GTINs, and Google knows it. Leaving the field empty triggers the warning.
- The barcode exists only at the parent level. Each variant (size, color) has its own GTIN. Filling it on one variant and not the others flags the rest.
- Your feed plugin isn't mapping the field. WooCommerce stores often have the barcode stored in a custom field or a different plugin's meta key that the feed never reads.
- Dropshipping catalogs. Supplier feeds frequently omit barcodes, or use internal SKUs that are not GTINs.
- Private label or handmade goods are misflagged. If you make the product yourself, it may have no GTIN at all, and the fix is different (see step 5).
How to fix it
Export the affected list. In Merchant Center, go to Products > Needs attention, filter by this issue, and download the CSV. This tells you exactly which item IDs need attention.
Find the real GTINs. Check the physical packaging, your purchase orders, the manufacturer's product data sheet, or ask your supplier or distributor for a barcode file. Never make up a number, reuse one product's GTIN on another, or buy random "barcodes" from resellers for products that already have a manufacturer GTIN. You can sanity-check each value with our GTIN checker before you upload it.
Add GTINs in your store or feed:
- Shopify (Google & YouTube app): Open each product, go to the variant, and enter the code in Barcode (ISBN, UPC, GTIN, etc.). For many products, use the bulk editor or a CSV import with the
Variant Barcodecolumn. Make sure the spreadsheet column is formatted as text so leading zeros survive. The app syncs changes to Merchant Center automatically. - WooCommerce: Recent WooCommerce versions include a GTIN/UPC/EAN/ISBN field on the product's Inventory tab, and the Google for WooCommerce extension also has a GTIN field in its product attributes section. Fill the one your feed plugin actually reads, and set it per variation for variable products.
- Other feeds: Add a
gtincolumn to your primary feed, or create a supplemental data source with justidandgtin. A supplemental source is the cleanest option when you can't edit the store data directly.
- Shopify (Google & YouTube app): Open each product, go to the variant, and enter the code in Barcode (ISBN, UPC, GTIN, etc.). For many products, use the bulk editor or a CSV import with the
Add brand and MPN where there is no GTIN. For products from a real manufacturer that never assigned a GTIN, submit
brandand the manufacturer'smpn. Don't paste your own SKU intompnunless you are the manufacturer.Use identifier_exists only for true exceptions. For custom, handmade, vintage or one-of-a-kind products with no identifiers, set
identifier_existstono(orfalse). In Shopify's Google & YouTube app, this is the This is a custom product option. Don't use it on branded resale items, because Google can detect that an identifier exists and will warn you again.Check the result. After the next sync, open a fixed product in Merchant Center and confirm the GTIN appears in the product details. Then watch the Needs attention tab.
How long until it's fixed
Google says changes may take some time to appear on the Needs attention page; for related identifier fixes it cites roughly 24 to 72 hours. Shopify and WooCommerce apps usually push updates within a few hours, but Merchant Center still has to reprocess the item. If the issue is still there after three or four days, open the product and check whether the GTIN actually reached Google, because a mapping problem is the most common reason a fix doesn't stick.
How to prevent it
- Make barcode a required field in your product creation checklist, at the variant level.
- Ask suppliers for barcode data before you list new products, and reject catalogs without it for branded goods.
- Store GTINs as text everywhere (spreadsheets, PIMs, CSVs) to protect leading zeros.
- Run a monthly export of products with empty barcodes and fix them in batches.
- Review new items in Merchant Center within a week of launch rather than waiting for performance to drop.
