Missing Image Link in Merchant Center: How to Fix It

Shown in Google Merchant Center: Missing value [image_link]

How do I fix "Missing value [image_link]" in Merchant Center?

"Missing value [image_link]" means the product reached Merchant Center without any main image URL, so Google can't show it in Shopping ads or free listings. The fix is to add a real product photo in your store (or an image_link column in your feed) for every affected product and variant, then let the feed resync. Usually it's a handful of products published without photos, or variants that have no image assigned.

    What this issue means

image_link is a required attribute for every product. It must be a URL to the main image, and the image must meet Google's requirements: a supported format (JPEG, PNG, WebP, non-animated GIF, BMP or TIFF), no promotional overlays, a real photo of the product, and the minimum size (100 x 100 for non-apparel and 250 x 250 for apparel today, rising to 500 x 500 for all products on January 31, 2027).

When the attribute is empty, the product is disapproved. This is different from issues where an image exists but Google can't use it, such as "Unable to show image" (crawl problems) or "Generic placeholder image".

A related issue, "Incorrect value: image link [image_link], additional image link [additional_image_link]", appears when the image exists but doesn't seem to match the product being advertised. The fix there is to replace it with a photo of the actual item.

    Why it happens

    • Product published without media. The most common cause. A product was created, made active and synced before photos were added.
    • Variants without images. Feeds often send each variant as its own product. If a variant has no image and the feed doesn't fall back to the parent image, that variant goes out with no image_link.
    • Feed mapping points to an empty field. A custom feed or plugin is mapped to a field like a variant image or a custom image field that's blank for most products.
    • Images hosted on an external service that was removed. Products import image URLs from a supplier or old site, and those URLs were later dropped during migration.
    • Supplemental source or attribute rule overwrote the value. A rule set image_link to a blank field, or a supplemental sheet has an empty image_link column for some IDs.
    • CSV import errors. A product CSV with an empty image column, or URLs in the wrong column.

    How to fix it

    1. Get the list. In Merchant Center, go to Products > Needs attention, filter for the missing image link issue, and download the CSV. Check whether the affected items are whole products or mostly variants; the fix is different.

    2. For products with no photos at all: add photos, or keep the product out of Google until you have them. A product without an image can't be approved, and sending a placeholder only swaps this issue for a generic image disapproval.

    3. For variants with no image:

      • Shopify (Google & YouTube app): Assign an image to each variant in the variant settings, or at least make sure the product has a featured image the channel can use. The channel uses the variant image when one is set and the product's featured image otherwise, but variants that look different should have their own photo.
      • WooCommerce: Set an image on each variation, or configure your feed plugin to fall back to the parent product image when a variation has none. Google for WooCommerce and most feed plugins handle this, but check the setting.
      • Feed files: Make sure every row has an image_link. If variants share an image, repeat the parent image URL on each variant row.
    4. For mapping problems: Open the feed settings in your plugin or feed tool and confirm image_link maps to the main product image. In Merchant Center, check the product's details to see which data source supplied the value, and look for attribute rules or supplemental sources that touch image_link.

    5. Use a supplemental source for quick fixes. Upload a sheet with id and image_link for affected items while you correct the store data.

    6. Add additional images too. While you're there, send extra angles through additional_image_link. Google allows additional images for other views of the product, and they help shoppers.

    7. Verify after sync. Open a few fixed products in Merchant Center and confirm the image URL appears and the image itself loads.

    How long until it's fixed

Once a valid image_link arrives, Merchant Center has to fetch the image before the product is approved. Google says new image URLs are typically processed within about three days, though crawling can take longer, and the Needs attention page can take 24 to 72 hours to update after changes. Store apps usually resend products within hours of saving.

    How to prevent it

    • Keep products in draft until they have at least one photo.
    • Make variant images part of your product creation checklist for products where variants look different.
    • Configure your feed to fall back to the parent image for variants.
    • Check image fields after every CSV import or catalog migration.
    • Exclude products without images from your Google feed automatically, so they never reach Merchant Center incomplete.

Missing images often point to gaps in how products get published. Frequently Asked Questions

No. imagelink is required for every product, so a product without a main image will be disapproved.

They can, technically, but Google recommends a separate image for each variant showing only that variant. If variants look identical apart from size, sharing the main image is common.

No. Missing value means no image URL was sent at all. Unable to show image means a URL was sent but Google couldn't fetch the file.
