Automatic Item Updates Stopped in Merchant Center: Fix It

Shown in Google Merchant Center: Not performing automatic item updates for price

How do I fix "Not performing automatic item updates for price" in Merchant Center?

"Not performing automatic item updates for price" means Google has stopped using your product pages to auto-correct prices for all your products, because it found incorrect structured data (microdata) or a large-scale mismatch between your pages and your Merchant Center data. To fix it, correct the price markup on your product pages so it matches the visible price and your feed, then let Google re-crawl; updates resume automatically once the data is trustworthy.

    What this issue means

Automatic item updates is a Merchant Center feature, turned on by default, that reads price, availability and condition from your landing pages and temporarily updates your listings when they don't match your feed. For example, if your feed says $4 and the page says $3, Google can show $3 instead of disapproving the item.

Google only relies on this when your pages are reliable. When it detects bad markup, or so many mismatches that the page data can't be trusted, it switches the feature off account-wide and shows this account issue. The direct consequence: every future price mismatch becomes a disapproval instead of a silent fix. You may see a matching issue for availability.

    Why it happens

    • Wrong price in schema. The JSON-LD or microdata shows the compare-at price, a price range, a price without decimals in the wrong format, or the price of a different variant.
    • Multiple conflicting Product markups. The theme, an SEO plugin and a reviews app each output their own schema with different prices.
    • Prices change more than once a day. Google notes that products whose price or availability change more than once per day may be disapproved rather than updated.
    • The feed is badly out of date. If most of your catalog mismatches because the feed hasn't refreshed in days, Google sees a large-scale mismatch.
    • Currency in markup differs from the feed, often from multi-currency apps or geolocation.
    • Strikethrough confusion. Pages showing several prices (regular, sale, member, bundle) make extraction unreliable.

    How to fix it

    1. Confirm the issue. In Merchant Center, check the account-level issues under Products (in Merchant Center Next these appear in the Needs attention area and account issues). Note whether it's for price, availability or both.
    2. Audit price markup on a sample. Test 10 to 20 product URLs across different templates with Google's Rich Results Test. For each, confirm:
      • There's one Product entity per page (or one per variant, clearly identified).
      • offers.price equals the visible selling price.
      • offers.priceCurrency is the correct ISO code (USD for US stores).
      • The price uses a plain number format like 899.99, without currency symbols or thousands separators.
    3. Remove duplicate schema.
      • Shopify: Many themes output product JSON-LD in the product template. If an SEO or reviews app also adds product schema, disable one. After a theme update, recheck the template, since updates can reintroduce markup.
      • WooCommerce: WooCommerce core outputs product structured data. Yoast WooCommerce SEO, Rank Math and some themes also do. Keep one, and confirm it uses the active sale price.
    4. Fix variant handling. Use variant-specific URLs in your feed and make sure the page's markup reflects the preselected variant. Use sku or gtin in the schema so Google can match each offer to the right item.
    5. Bring the feed up to date. Trigger a fresh fetch or app resync so your Merchant Center prices match today's site prices. If prices change several times a day, move to API updates or more frequent fetches.
    6. Check for mass mismatches. Download the affected products CSV from Needs attention and compare against your live prices to confirm the gap has closed.
    7. Verify the automation is enabled. In Products > Automations, open the price (and availability) automation with View details and make sure it's on.

    How long until it's fixed

Once the markup and feed are fixed, Google re-crawls your pages and resumes updates automatically; there's no button to force it. Google says changes can take 24 to 72 hours to show on the Needs attention page. On large catalogs the account issue can take noticeably longer to clear than a single item fix, because Google needs to re-crawl enough pages to trust them again.

    How to prevent it

    • Treat structured data as part of your feed: test it after every theme, app or plugin change.
    • Keep one schema source and one price per variant per page.
    • Don't rely on automatic item updates as your main sync. Google describes it as a supplement for sporadic mismatches.
    • Refresh your feed at least daily, and more often during promotions.
    • Check feed values with the Merchant Center feed checker.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Google recommends schema.org markup but says its data extractors can sometimes work without it. Inaccurate markup is worse than none, because it can trigger this issue.

Not automatically, but any price mismatch Google finds will now cause a disapproval instead of being auto-corrected. Expect more mismatch disapprovals until it's fixed.

The toggle controls whether you allow updates, but Google decides when to resume them. Fixing the markup and mismatches is what gets them working again.
