Mismatched Product Availability in Merchant Center: Fix

Shown in Google Merchant Center: Mismatched product availability

How do I fix "Mismatched product availability" in Merchant Center?

"Mismatched product availability" means the availability value in your product data (for example in_stock) doesn't match what Google sees on your landing page, checkout or structured data (for example "Sold out"). The fastest fix is to make your feed update as often as your inventory changes, correct the page's schema availability, and turn on automatic item updates for availability while the feed catches up.

    What this issue means

Google crawls your product pages and compares their stock status with what you submitted. If the feed says a product can be bought but the page says it can't, or the reverse, Google disapproves the item. In older accounts the same problem is labeled Mismatched value (page crawl) [availability].

The "feed says in stock, page says out of stock" direction is the one Google cares about most, because it sends shoppers to products they can't buy. The reverse (feed says out of stock, page is buyable) also gets flagged, and it quietly costs you sales.

    Why it happens

    • Inventory changes faster than the feed. Stock sells out mid-day, but the feed updates once a day.
    • Variant-level stock. One size is sold out, but the feed or the URL points to the product, not the variant. If the page defaults to the sold-out variant, Google reads it as unavailable.
    • Theme schema hardcodes availability. Some themes output InStock in JSON-LD regardless of inventory, or use the first variant's status for all.
    • Out-of-stock used as a pause. Merchants set out_of_stock to hide a product temporarily while the page still sells it.
    • Preorder and backorder confusion. The site accepts preorders, but the feed says out_of_stock (or in_stock without an availability date on the page).
    • Regional differences. A product is sold in some regions but not others, and the data doesn't reflect it.
    • Shipping doesn't cover the location. Google's guidance notes that shipping settings that don't cover the countries in your product data can also contribute.

    How to fix it

    1. Open the affected items. Go to Products > Needs attention in Merchant Center and filter by this issue. Note whether Google found "out of stock" or "in stock" on the page.
    2. Check the page as a shopper. Open the exact URL from your feed in a private window. Is the default variant the one in the feed? Can you add it to cart?
    3. Test the structured data. Use the Rich Results Test and confirm offers.availability (for example https://schema.org/InStock) matches reality for that variant.
    4. Fix the source.
      • Shopify (Google & YouTube app): The app syncs inventory status from Shopify. Make sure inventory tracking is turned on for the variants, and that "Continue selling when out of stock" reflects how you actually sell. Each variant should be submitted with its own ?variant= URL. If your theme's schema reports the wrong status, ask your theme developer to output availability per selected variant.
      • WooCommerce: Check Manage stock on products and variations. With Google for WooCommerce, confirm sync is current in its product feed status. With third-party feed plugins, raise the feed regeneration frequency and set Merchant Center to fetch more often.
      • File feeds: Schedule fetches to run right after your inventory export. For fast-moving stock, move to the Merchant API.
    5. Stop using out_of_stock to hide products. Google recommends the pause attribute to hide products for up to 14 days, and excluded_destination for longer.
    6. Handle preorders and backorders correctly. Use preorder or backorder plus availability_date, and show that date on the landing page.
    7. Turn on automatic item updates for availability under Products > Automations. Google treats preorder and backorder as matching in_stock there, and it fixes occasional mismatches automatically.
    8. Request a website check when the data agrees, or wait for the next crawl.

    How long until it's fixed

After your data source updates, Google re-crawls the pages and clears the disapproval, usually within a few days. Google notes the Needs attention page can take time to update. A requested website check can take up to 12 hours. If items keep going in and out of disapproval, your update frequency is still too slow for your sell-through rate.

    How to prevent it

    • Sync inventory at least as often as it meaningfully changes; several times a day for fast sellers.
    • Submit variants individually with variant-specific URLs.
    • Have one plugin or theme component output product schema, with availability tied to live inventory.
    • Use pause or excluded_destination instead of fake out-of-stock values.
    • Use the Merchant Center feed checker to catch missing or invalid availability values.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Not necessarily. Submitting them as outofstock keeps their history and lets them return quickly when restocked. Just make sure the landing page also shows them as unavailable.

That's a related issue Google reports separately as inaccurate availability. Fix your checkout so in-stock items can actually be purchased, or mark them out of stock.

Not if they're submitted correctly. Use preorder with an availabilitydate and show the expected date on the page. Automatic item updates treat preorder as matching in stock.
