"Inaccurate shipping costs" means the shipping rates in your Merchant Center settings or shipping attribute are lower than what your website charges at checkout. To fix it, rebuild your Merchant Center shipping rules so they equal (or slightly exceed) your real checkout rates for each country, weight band and order value, then resubmit and request a review.
Inaccurate Shipping Costs in Merchant Center: How to Fix It
How do I fix "Inaccurate shipping costs" in Merchant Center?
What this issue means
Google estimates the total cost a shopper will pay based on the shipping you declared. When its checks show your checkout charging more, shoppers are getting an artificially low total in ads and free listings. Google flags the affected products, usually emails example items and can escalate to account-level action if it isn't fixed, so treat it as a priority.
Note the direction: declaring shipping that's higher than checkout isn't the problem. Google explicitly allows slightly overestimating shipping costs when your rates can't be modeled exactly.
Why it happens
- Carrier-calculated rates at checkout, flat rates in Merchant Center. Your store uses live UPS, USPS or FedEx rates, but Merchant Center has a single flat rate that's too low for heavy items or distant zip codes.
- Free-shipping threshold mismatch. Merchant Center says free over $50; the site says free over $75, or the threshold excludes certain products.
- Missing surcharges. Handling fees, residential delivery fees, oversized-item fees or packaging charges added at checkout.
- Shipping apps out of sync. A rate app or third-party calculator changes prices without updating Merchant Center.
- Product-level overrides are stale. Old
shippingvalues in the feed override your updated account-level rates. - Weight data is wrong or missing. Weight-based rules undercharge because
shipping_weightis lower than the real packaged weight. - Regional differences. Alaska, Hawaii or remote areas cost more on the site but use the same rate in Merchant Center.
How to fix it
- Start from the examples. Use the products in Google's warning email or the Needs attention tab. For each, run a test checkout to a few US addresses (local, cross-country, Alaska or Hawaii if you ship there) and record the shipping charged.
- Find the pattern. Is the gap tied to weight, order value, region or a specific fee? It's almost always one rule, not random products.
- Rebuild your shipping services in Merchant Center to mirror checkout:
- Flat rate on the site: set the same flat rate.
- Price-based tiers: recreate each order-value band, including the free-shipping threshold.
- Weight-based tables: recreate the bands and make sure every product has an accurate
shipping_weight. - Carrier rates: Merchant Center supports carrier-calculated rates for supported carriers in some countries, using origin postal code, dimensions and weight. If your exact setup can't be represented, overestimate.
- Regional rates: add region-specific rates or exclusions for areas that cost more.
- Account for every fee. Any handling or service fee charged at checkout must be bundled into the shipping cost (or the product price, shown on page and at checkout).
- Clean up overrides. Search your feed and supplemental data sources for
shippingvalues that override account rules. Remove stale ones or correct them. Remember that product-level shipping beats account-level settings. - Platform specifics.
- Shopify (Google & YouTube app): If the app syncs shipping from Shopify, check what it created in Merchant Center. Shopify carrier-calculated rates and app-generated rates may not transfer exactly; switching to Merchant Center-managed shipping can give you more control.
- WooCommerce: If Google for WooCommerce syncs your zones, recheck flat rates, classes and free shipping minimums. Fees added by plugins (handling, packaging) won't sync and need to be reflected manually.
- Resubmit data if you changed the feed, then request a review from the issue in Merchant Center.
How long until it's fixed
Account-level shipping changes reprocess quickly, but the disapproval clears only after Google re-checks your site. Google's guidance for related checkout issues says review crawls usually complete within 24 to 48 hours of a request. Feed-level changes also need your next data source update to land first.
How to prevent it
- When you change shipping rates, carriers or thresholds on your store, update Merchant Center the same day.
- Prefer one source of truth: either sync shipping from your platform or manage it only in Merchant Center.
- Audit
shipping_weightagainst real packaged weights for your heaviest products. - Re-test checkout after installing shipping or cart apps.
