Missing Tax in Merchant Center (US): How to Fix It in 2026

Shown in Google Merchant Center: Missing value [tax]

How do I fix "Missing value [tax]" in Merchant Center?

Since July 1, 2025, Google no longer requires US merchants to provide sales tax in Merchant Center, either through tax settings or the tax and tax_category attributes, so "Missing value [tax]" should no longer disapprove US products. If you still see a tax issue, it's usually a stale notification, a malformed tax value you're still sending, or an outdated integration; fix or remove the bad tax data and let the products reprocess.

    What this issue means

For years, Google required tax information for every product sold in the US, and products without it were disapproved with Missing value [tax]. Google changed that in its 2025 product data specification update: US sales tax is no longer required, and Google said offers that had been disapproved for missing tax may begin receiving traffic.

That leaves three situations where tax still matters:

    SituationWhat it means
Old issue still showingA historical status hasn't cleared after reprocessing
You send tax but it's invalidMissing sub-attributes (such as rate) or wrong format can still be flagged
Your tax data is lower than checkoutGoogle's tax information checks can still flag inaccurate values

Outside the US, prices generally must already include VAT or GST in price, so there's no separate tax attribute to add.

    Why it happens

    • The issue predates July 2025 and the affected products haven't been reprocessed since.
    • A feed or plugin still sends a partial tax attribute, for example a state with no rate, which can trigger "Missing sub-attribute" style warnings.
    • Tax was added to the US price. US prices should exclude sales tax; including it makes prices look wrong compared with the landing page.
    • An old integration still writes US tax settings or tax values you no longer maintain.
    • Inaccurate tax data. If you do submit tax, and it's lower than what checkout charges, Google may flag it as incorrect tax information.

    How to fix it

    1. Confirm the issue and country. In Products > Needs attention, filter by the tax issue and check that the country is the US. If it's another country, the real problem is likely VAT not included in price.
    2. Trigger reprocessing for stale issues. Re-fetch your data source or resync your app so every product is processed under current rules. In many cases that alone clears the legacy issue.
    3. Decide whether to send tax at all. You don't have to. The simplest setup for most US stores is to stop sending the tax attribute and leave account-level US tax settings empty, so Google handles tax estimates. If you prefer to keep providing tax, make every value complete and accurate.
    4. Remove or fix bad tax values.
      • Feed files: Delete the tax column, or make sure each value includes country, region and rate (for example US:CA:8.25:y, where the last flag indicates whether tax applies to shipping).
      • Attribute rules: Use an attribute rule on the data source to clear the tax attribute for all products if your source keeps sending it.
      • Supplemental data source: If one supplemental sheet adds tax to items, remove that column or the source.
    5. Check your integrations.
      • Shopify (Google & YouTube app): The app manages product data sync; US tax no longer needs to be configured for approval. If a tax issue persists, reconnect or resync the app and confirm no other feed app is sending tax.
      • WooCommerce: Older versions of feed plugins may map WooCommerce tax classes to a tax attribute. Update the plugin and disable tax export if you don't need it.
    6. Make sure US prices exclude sales tax. Your US price should match the pre-tax price on the product page.
    7. If a tax issue persists after a full reprocess, contact Merchant Center support with the product ID and issue name.

    How long until it's fixed

After you re-fetch or resync, products reprocess within minutes to hours, but the Needs attention page can lag. Most stale tax issues clear within one to three days. If products had been disapproved for missing tax for a long time, they may need a little time to start getting impressions again.

    How to prevent it

    • Don't send tax data unless you'll keep it accurate.
    • Keep US prices tax-exclusive and non-US prices tax-inclusive.
    • After plugin updates, check that tax mapping hasn't been switched back on.
    • Watch campaign spend: Google warned that previously disapproved products may now get traffic.
