"Pending initial review" means Google hasn't finished its first review of your products, which happens when you're new to Merchant Center or upload product data for the first time. Google says reviews may take up to 3 to 5 business days for Shopping ads and a few weeks for other features like free listings. The best thing to do is make sure your website and feed are compliant, then avoid making unnecessary changes, because additional changes can further delay the review.
Pending Initial Review in Merchant Center: What to Do
How do I fix "Pending initial review" in Google Merchant Center?
What this issue means
This is a status, not an error. Your products are under review: Google is checking that your product data meets its specifications and that your website meets its requirements before showing anything. Until the review finishes, products won't serve in Shopping ads or free listings.
Don't confuse it with these related statuses:
| Status | What it means | Typical wait |
|---|---|---|
| Pending initial review | First review of new account or new products | Up to 3 to 5 business days for ads; longer for free listings |
| Processing | Google is applying an edit you made | Up to about 15 minutes, per Google |
| Pending image crawl | Google hasn't fetched the image yet | Clears automatically |
Why it happens
The initial review is normal for every new account. It takes longer when:
- The account or website is new, so Google has no history to go on.
- You keep changing things. Google notes that additional changes to your product data and website during the review may delay it.
- The website isn't ready. Missing contact information, return policy, shipping details or secure checkout means the review may stall or end in a misrepresentation issue.
- The website isn't verified and claimed, so products can't be approved.
- Your catalog is large or includes categories that need extra checks.
- You're selling in certain countries where reviews can take longer.
How to fix it
You can't force the review to finish, but you can make sure it ends in approval:
- Confirm the basics are complete. In Merchant Center, check that your business information is filled in, the website is verified and claimed, and shipping and return settings exist for every country you target.
- Make your website review-ready. Google looks for a trustworthy store, so your site should have:
- Clear contact details (email, phone or address) that are easy to find.
- A visible return and refund policy; our return policy generator can help.
- A shipping policy that matches your Merchant Center settings.
- A working, secure (HTTPS) checkout with no placeholder text or broken pages.
- Check your feed for errors. Fix any item-level issues already showing in Needs attention, such as missing shipping or invalid URLs. Our Merchant Center feed checker can help you spot problems before Google does.
- Stop making non-essential changes. Don't repeatedly delete and reupload the feed, switch apps or change the website domain. Each change can restart or delay review work.
- Platform specifics.
- Shopify (Google & YouTube app): Make sure the store isn't password-protected, the app shows the products as syncing and you've completed the app's store requirements checklist. Then leave it alone.
- WooCommerce (Google for WooCommerce): Complete the onboarding steps (website claim, shipping, policies). Confirm product sync shows no errors in the plugin dashboard.
- If it's been longer than expected, Google says you can request a review in Merchant Center and should double-check that your website content, contact information and product data comply with its policies. If nothing changes, contact Merchant Center support.
How long until it's fixed
Google's guidance is up to 3 to 5 business days for Shopping ads and a few weeks for free listings and other features. Large catalogs and new domains can take longer. After the initial review, ongoing edits are processed much faster.
If the review ends in an account-level issue such as misrepresentation, products will move to disapproved instead of approved. Our guide to Merchant Center misrepresentation explains what to fix.
How to prevent it
- Finish your website (policies, contact page, checkout) before connecting Merchant Center.
- Upload a clean, complete feed once rather than many partial uploads.
- Avoid big structural changes, such as switching domains or apps, in your first weeks.
- Plan launches with the review time in mind, especially before holidays.
